Dwelling unit area is the total sum of the area walls, floors and ceiling. Any part of the building that includes living facilities, including rooms or a room with toilet, bathing, kitchen or laundry facilities, such as shelters, dormitories, boarding homes and assisted living facilities is called a dwelling unit. This number of dwelling units is much higher than erstwhile housing scheme wherein only 12.4 lakh houses were sanctioned. What are Dwelling Units and What are Their Different Types?

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-U) dwelling unitsare sections of larger structures, where individuals or family live, eat and sleep. They are private living quarters where people live away from rest of the residents living in buildings. They are found in a variety of structures, such as apartments, single-family homes and condominium buildings. Many rooms in a large structure such as a motel or hotel are also found. Families or individuals can live, sleep and eat from others in these units. This is the reason they are called separate living quarters. Different types of dwelling units include the following:

• Private Residence: Private residence dwelling units are occupied by private households. Flat, single-family homes, boarding houses, and portions of commercial buildings are its examples. These housing units are meant for the accommodation of less than six individuals.  

• Unoccupied Dwelling Units: This type of dwelling units is not used for the occupancy at the time of enumeration. It also includes housing units that have been vacant for minimum six months.  

• Closed Dwelling Units: This type of dwelling units is occupied by residents.But they are often away throughout the enumeration period, which is less than six months.  

• Double Dwelling Units: This type of housing has two living units on one land unit.
